Getting Rid of Emotional Eating Habits

Emotional eating or compulsive over eating is an unnatural carving for food associated to some behavioral problems. A person who suffers this kind of food addiction often consumes large quantities of food beyond the point of being comfortably full. Such a situation may lead you to problems like obesity and other health complications associated to excess body weight.

Symptoms of compulsive over eating include uncontrollable eating, eating much more rapidly than a normal person does, eating to avoid emotional issues like shame and embarrassment, depression, mood swings and weight fluctuations. Many who suffer these problems are found to be over conscious about their abnormal eating habit. These persons normally do not eat much in public. Preoccupation with body weight may prompt them to follow different unsuccessful diet habits that ultimately make them to eat more.

Compulsive overeating can be treated with counseling and therapy. The co operation of the person is a must to get the best result from the treatment. Emotional eating is a problem that requires special attention to the emotional insecurity of the patient.

The reasons behind developing a problem like this can be caused for a number of reasons that include unemployment, health problems, divorce or day to day life stresses. One has to identify the actual problem behind this behavioral irregularity to get out of this health issue.

A conscious effort from the part of the patient will help him to reduce his unnecessary carving for food. It is important to understand the true cause behind the hunger or food carving. You can identify the real issue with an expert doctor. If it is something physical, go for therapeutic treatment as suggested by your doctor. If emotional, you should take necessary steps to address the problem by consulting a behavioral therapist.

Now make an attempt to write down what and how much you eat. It will help you to understand what foods you will have to avoid in your daily menu to avoid health risks. The best method to avoiding unnecessary eating is to avoid having unhealthy food at home or work place.

If you cannot resist a snack in between your meals, go for low-calorie foods that do not make you bulky. You should learn the technique of substituting high-calorie foods with health food.

Designing a healthy diet with the help of a dietitian will help you to add more healthy and less dangerous food to your regular diet. Try to make exercise a part of your day to day activities; it will keep you charged all day.
